An Absolute Favorite of the Year For Me!

Vicky Langford, a single parent following the murder of her detective husband Danny while on duty, leaves the force herself to become a crime reporter for the Herald and raise her 18 month old son, Josh. Her new position of crime reporter is perfect for an ex-cop not only knowing the ends and outs but having a bit of clout with her godfather, Paxton, the chief of police. Beginning at a murder scene, in which Vicky pushes herself on the sight, she meets Jim McCann, a former Seattle police officer. Their first meeting consisted of butting heads when he demanded her to leave the scene, not realizing her godfather allows her some latitude because of her abilities to solve crimes... Vicky is determined to take down the crime boss, Richard Blackwell, who she believes is behind the murder of her husband. What she doesn't expect is to find her and her son in jeopardy from this investigation. It isn't long before she discovers someone stalking her and the police officer, assigned to protect her and Josh, was murdered in her yard. Backing off didn't help, her son Josh was abducted and the only clue she had was a note pinned to his Teddy Bear. Jim became more of a puzzle than she bargained for when her heart started falling for him yet her mind became suspicious of his possible involvement with Richard Blackwell. Lullaby has all the ingredients to make it one of the best suspenseful thrillers I've ever read. Sherry Scarpaci has a talent to weave a multifaceted mystery keeping one's attention from the first page to the last. For a first book, it's a winner all the way and I give it my highest recommendation.

Complex, exciting suspense novel

In Sherry Scarpaci's debut mystery, Vicky Langford is raising her 18-month-old son, Josh, alone after her policeman husband was murdered on the job. A former police officer herself, Vicky is using her current position as an investigative reporter to gather evidence against the crime boss she blames for her husband's death. Someone is stalking and threatening Vicky, but she isn't able to connect her tormentor to the man who wants to stop her investigation. The policeman assigned to protect her is murdered in her yard, and soon afterward Josh vanishes. The abductor leaves behind a threatening note, pinned to the boy's teddy bear. Vicky is already at odds with Jim McCann, the detective on the case, but she has to find a way to work with him in the search for her child. Her growing trust and attraction are undermined, however, by suspicion that McCann may be an enemy rather than an ally. Scarpaci handles a complex, suspenseful plot with confidence, and she convincingly portrays Vicky as a strong, likeable woman driven to the edge of despair by her child's disappearance. Some of the people in Vicky's world are not what they seem, and Scarpaci kept me guessing about the solution to the end.

exciting suspense thriller

Following the death of her beloved detective spouse Danny in the line of duty, cop Vicky Langford left the Westport police force to become a crime reporter for the Herald. She always felt crime king Richard Blackwell killed her husband and wounded his partner, who since recovered. At a murder scene, Vicky meets the newest detective Jim McCann, a former Seattle cop who directs her to leave as reporters are not wanted at the crime scene (or anywhere else). He later learns her godfather, chief of police Paxton, has made an exception with her because she has helped them solve cases even though she no longer is a cop. However, when someone breaks into her home, Vicky realizes her obsession endangers her young son eighteen-month-old Josh so she plans to back off her investigation of Blackwell. However, that does not stop the Dark Man's stalking her from continuing his terrorist assault on her by apparently raising the stakes culminating with the abduction of Josh. As Vicky and Jim are falling in love, she risks her life to save her beloved infant from the Dark Man. LULLABY is an exciting suspense thriller starring an interesting heroine struggling to move past the death of her spouse for the sake of their offspring, but unable to let go of his murder until the newcomer gets her to see the danger she causes to her son. The Dark Man's motive strongly parallels Vicky's obsession to see Blackwell go down. Although the romantic subplot between Vicky and Jim seems out of place, fans of tense mysteries will appreciate Sherry Scarpaci's strong debut. Harriet Klausner
