Excellent, richly written book

I cannot imagine what the School Library Book (the second review at top of page) reviewer was smoking -- this is a wonderful, richly imagined book. The children are believably portrayed, and the interlocking themes of loneliness, fantasy, courage, and honesty are handled beautifully. Far from being made light of, the story of the abused children is central to the book, and is handled with moral seriousness and respect for children. The resourcefulness of the two preteen girls is also a welcome theme. I can't recommend this book highly enough for schoolchildren, girls and boys both (although it undoubtedly is more of a hit with girls).

You're Missing Out If You've Missed This Book

I can't believe no one has written a review of this! It's a FANTASTIC book. It's full of real suspense and real danger, but not too scary for kids ages 8 and up. Lucy "Forever" is the hero of the story who works with her best friend to save a child in danger. It's wonderfully written with vivid characterizations -- particularly Lucy's parents (including her very English child psychiatrist father who inspires her) and her very Catholic best friend. A rollicking read well worth the time of anyone who likes a great story.
