Luces de emergencia podr a ser la se al de auxilio al llamado colectivo de nuestro tiempo. Once historias como once posibles promesas narradas con tal mastr a que nos hace olvidar que es ficci n lo que aqu se cuenta. En los relatos de Oswaldo estrada dos caracter sticas resaltan. La aparente sencillez con que narra un acontecimiento que se instala desde el principio en las emociones y ya no nos suelta y el desenlace inesperado t pico de los grandes cuentos que obedecen a las reglas del g nero. Se trata de historias redondas, perfectas como piedras pulidas que sin embargo nos lastiman e inquietan. La magia consiste en que Oswaldo constuye nesperadas versiones hechas con los temas de todos los d as. La angustia de un ni o migrante, la muerte en ese otro destierro que es un asilo, la marca indeleble de la violencia dom stica. Por encima de todas campea el tema de temas de nuestro tiempo: la permanente huida. Como l mismo, de origen peruano criado en un mundo de migrantes, sus personajes encarnan la contradicci n de aqu llos cuyo nico sentido de pertenencia est en el lenguaje. Una forma de nombrar hecha de muchas formas que expresan la concidencia de que habitar dos lenguas es estar condenado a la diversidad como nica tierra firme. Luces de emergencia desmonta las ideas fijas de patria, familia, relaci n con los otros y propone un nuevo modelo de mundo: aqu l en que los otros somos inevitablemente todos buscando una salida. La utop a de que pase a la hostilidad al final hay una luz que algo nos promete.

Emergency Lights could be an SOS--our time's collective call for help. Eleven stories, like eleven possible promises, narrated with such mastery that we forget this is fiction. Two qualities stand out in Oswaldo Estrada's work: the apparent simplicity with which he tells an event that takes hold of our emotions from the first page and won't let go, and the unexpected ending typical of great short fiction that follows the genre's rules. These are complete, perfect stories--like polished stones that nonetheless bruise and unsettle us. The magic lies in how Estrada builds unexpected versions out of everyday themes: the anguish of a migrant child; death in that other exile called a nursing home; the indelible mark of domestic violence. Above them all hovers the theme of themes in our time: perpetual flight. Like the author himself--Peruvian-born, raised among migrants--his characters embody the contradiction of those whose only sense of belonging is in language. A way of naming made of many ways, expressing the certainty that inhabiting two tongues is to be condemned to diversity as the only firm ground. Emergency Lights dismantles fixed ideas of homeland, family, and our relationship to others, and proposes a new model of the world: one in which "the others" are inevitably all of us, searching for an exit--the utopia that, beyond hostility, there is a light at the end that promises something.
