Life's Complications (RAW Rating: 4.5)

From the last two books in the Albertina Merci series, Albertina has faced a career change designed by God, a triangle of affection from two different men and an attempt to takeover her church. As pastor of the House of Trust, a flourishing congregation in Los Angeles, California, she is ready to take on whatever is in store for her. She is in a developing relationship with avowed atheist, Mario. Her life, though busy with her church and family, seems to be in balance. That is, until she receives word that her friend, Shaleena Love, has been killed in a bus accident. Pastor Merci rushes to Memphis to be with Shaleena's surviving child, her godson Julius Jay Love (J). J, a teenage superstar due to his status as a hip hop Christian rapper, is devastated. He has already lost his dad and now his mother is gone; nothing seems good to him. How could God do this to him? He clings to what he knows and believes in--his godmother Albertina Merci. She offers him her love, guidance and home as he reels from this setback. Having already raised her own children and with a busy personal and professional life, Pastor Merci finds having a teenager, who has star appeal, in the home makes life very interesting. As Pastor Merci guides J, they both get caught up in the glitz and glamour of the entertainment world. Pastor Merci has aspirations of continuing her legacy as a blues singer while ministering and J gets seduced by the fame, money and girls at his disposal. For Pastor Merci, her legions of fans want to see a comeback for her, but she must make sure it is of God. For J, doing right and staying right may be a little harder when he has smooth talking agents and girls blowing in his ears at the same time. Even though it seems like everything is falling apart all around her, Pastor Merci remains attentive to God's plan. She knows her faith will be the guiding example everyone will be looking at. LOVE TORNADO, by authors Mable John and David Ritz, is a well-written and amazingly inspirational read about the pitfalls Christians can become prey to. It's just a matter of who you lean on to get you through and no one is exempt. I loved the fact that the main character, though a minister, was not preachy or pumped up with righteous indignation at all things that veered from that imaginary white line religion tends to paint for us to follow. She listened when prompted to, she talked when necessary, she rebuked where needed and sometimes she allowed silence to do the job for her. All the characters were well-developed and provided a few toe-mashing moments for me. The authors' use of prayer, at opportune times, provided not only examples of when to pray, but prayers that could be easily adapted for my personal use. Though this is a stand alone novel, find the time to read all three so that you may enjoy the full impact of this series. It is worthy of the effort.
