Education is Broken

Our world of teaching and learning is broken. And almost all of us in the field know it. It's the gigantic elephant in the room that so many teachers and students see and deal with on a daily basis. What we are doing in modern education is not working.
Walk into any high school, college, professional development seminar, or religious class today, and odds are you will find some iteration of the same old same old teacher-centered, lecture-heavy, sit-in-rows-and-listen classroom the Western world has been using since the Industrial Revolution. We are stuck in an educational rut, a rut of both practice and principle, that is just not producing much real learning and personal growth. Oh, there may be some minimal amount of knowledge gained, or some incidental learning taking place, but nothing compared to what we as human beings are capable of.
The problem is, we are focused in education on teaching for the teachers' sake, or for the sake of those who control the teachers.
