17 years old and terribly alone, Cherish Riley runs into the Kentucky wilderness from the low-down family that dared to sell her. She meets a man named Sloan Carroll, who proposes to her, but he finds that it will take a little more to win her heart.
I agreed pretty much with all the posts for this story. Cherish was sweet, a little too sweet and innocent. I mean you'd think she would have gained some gumption from all the crazy people she was stuck with before Sloan found her and did the requisite hero rescue. I think the best parts of the story are the side characters, Pierre and Katherine, the two old guys that live with Sloan and John Spotted Elk and his sister. Over all it is a decent story, but not the best.
BETTER THAN YOU THINK!

Cherish Riley is displaced from her Virginian home and lost and alone with some crude grunts. She is waiting for the return of her brother but the crud wants to trade her off to some weasels. She takes off to try and disappear into the forests along the Kentucky river. Mind you, this is Daniel Boone's time in history.Terror, fear and exhustion dog her footsteps until she is rescued by a bear of a man and his unapproachable dog, Brown. [grin] Blink yourself into her time and see how you would fare. Traveling in October with no real warm clothing had to be a trial in itself. Sloan did his best to provide for Cherish.Sloan Carroll is looking to pick up a wife to take home to his homestead to take care of his brother's child. Cherish is an angelic answer to his problem and he determines to return home sooner than expected. And he intends to keep his heart intact. No falling in love and giving any woman emotional power over him.Except for those blasted Hurons slowing him down. The Frenchie, Pierre is one lovable character and puts Cherish at ease. It's not easy being seventeen in a land of men, and one needs a man's protection.I could feel the freezing cold and exhustion of the characters as they arived home needing the help of Juice and True to make it inside. These two men turn out to be true friends. The advent of Ada coming for her baby, Orah Delle and stalking Sloan was a bit wicked. And then the doubts raised by Minnie Dove and her pursuit of Sloan and the friendship of John Spotted Elk began to round out Cherish's life in the small community.I don't see how she got over the visual extermination of the river rats so quickly - [I would still be having nightmares]but Cherish had the support of so many friends. I hope John Spotted Elk gets a story and a woman of his own.HIGHLY RECOMMENDED [if you can get in tune with the times.] I couldn't put it down and to me that makes an excellent story.
Not outstanding but good...

As a big Dorothy Garlock fan I was not blown-away by this book but it was pretty good. Out of the books set in the 1700's I would definitly recommend this over Annie Lash. Sloan saves Cherish from some river thugs and takes her to his home to care for his motherless child. The child's mother returns and causes major havoc. Of course the river thugs return to cause some trouble. Throughout all of this though is Sloan and Cherish and their determination to be together. There is also good background to the characters from the River series. If you have never read a Dorothy Garlock book before than I would recommend The Listening Sky or Larkspur.
Absolutely wonderful, I could not put it down!

I am glad the previous review did not stop me from picking up this little gem form the used bookstore. I had read "Forever Victoria" by Dorothy Garlock and ran out to find another book by this author right away. "Love and Cherish" by Dorothy Garlock was absolutely wonderful, I could not put it down, read it in one sitting. I felt the love and passion between these characters, that you sometimes do not find in a lot of romance stories. If you want an escape from reality and enjoy historical romances, then you will love this book. Do yourself a favour and run out and find this book, you will not be disappointed.
Don't let this one get away!

This is the first book by Garlock that I have read and I am sorrow I didn't discover her sooner if this is any indication of her talent. As a veteran reader of all genres, it takes a lot to impress me. 'Love and Cherish' is an outstanding historical romance that is far and above the average romance tale. It is deep, emotional and full of courage and real love. The characters are wonderful and become like friends you feel honored to know. The plot is different, the villian in this story is a female; one of the all-time worst evildoers I can remember reading about. I hated to see this book end. I am anxious to read another by Garlock. Read this soon!!! Don't miss it!
