Both a family saga and a sweeping war novel, this book is set in northeastern Croatia and recounts the fate of the Volksdeutsche, the German minority that had settled in the region in the eighteenth century. Recruited into the Waffen SS during the Second World War, these men and women found themselves trapped between conflicting loyalties. The protagonist, Georg Kempf, is a German soldier "against his will" who, after witnessing the horrors of war, chooses to desert. At the heart of the narrative lies the tragic love story between Georg and Vera, a Croatian partisan--two former enemies bound together by a shared history marked by violence.
