Francis Ryck published several espionage thrillers in French during the 1960's and 1970's. Five were translated into English, including "The Loaded Gun". Ryck's books transcend the specific events of the Cold War with their emphasis on personal growth and interaction. At the same time, Ryck is a keen commentator on "spy craft" and leads the reader into exciting and fast paced plots. The Loaded Gun tells the tale of a Soviet spy whose identity was compromised by Western intelligence. Given little to survive on, but the chance to save his own life against the forces of retribution set against him, the former agent takes the reader on an intense and thrilling adventure. The book is a very quick read (4-5 hours) and provides a great return for one's time. "The Loaded Gun" was the first of Ryck's books that I read, which I purchased in a budget bin at a local antique shop. Not expecting much, I found the book fully engaging and have since read "Woman Hunt" and "Green Light, Red Catch", which I also enjoyed. While I found "The Loaded Gun" and "GreenLight, Red Catch" a bit more exciting than "Woman Hunt", I would recommend them all to any avid espionage reader.
