Thieve's Country

Written in 1966 my February 1982 Bantam mass-market paperback was one among a series of Elmer Kelton books published as Tales of Texas. This is a good one. It takes place in the 1880's in an area known as the "hill country". John Titus intends to break up the rustlers and the no-accounts which have called this territory their home. He gathers up an army of cowboys to take law into their own hands and bring to the Llano River some peace and quiet when all was done. No one writes a better western about Texas than Elmer Kelton, as he grew up in Texas and knew the state's history in full detail. Get this one for yourself to read.

excellent story

Great story set in a uniquely beautiful part of Texas; good plot, enough action; good read

Llano River

another Great Elemer Kelton story, each one different, not like some authors that expand on the last one. This book has new people in a new town with a new story line.

Best Western

I usualy read contemporary mysteries. Elmer Kelton was mentioned as a writer of note in an on line arcticle I read. I picked up this book and I was highly impressed with his style, his depiction of that time, and his wonderful characters, all human ordinary souls dealing with life as it comes to them. Now I am hooked and find myself reading Kelton nightly. Llano River is much more that a Western. It is a story about the human condition, richly displayed, with character, and a simple yet heart warming morality throughout, timeless literature. I highly recommend Llano River. Kelton at his best.

Llano River by Elmer Kelton

For those who don't need the ponderous descriptions of the countryside of Louis L'Amour but do enjoy a well written western. This is Kelton at his best.

Great Western Storyteller

Elmer Kelton is one of the great storytellers in the western genre. If you like Louis Lamour or Giles Tippette, you will find Elmer Kelton's books just as enjoyable. His characters are complete, complex, likeable people who are dealing with what life throws at them. Llano River is not the typical story of a gunfighter. It is instead, the story of a man with "no backup in him", who takes a difficult job, and then finds himself faced with reconciling his job with his feelings. Kelton is just a good storyteller, and his characters and the Texas landscape come to life for us. I would recommend any Kelton book to lovers of western fiction.
