Pets travel the world!

My two little great-nieces, Carolina and Cadie, 5 and 2, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE their Pet Shop animals. They must have 50 and know all their names. Their brother bought them a three-part house at a garage sale out of his own money. When I saw "Littlest Pet Shop World Tour" at our book fair, I had to buy it for them. This is THE best kind of children's book, in my opinion, because it combines favorite toys, art, and education, particularly geography and landmarks. When I read Madeline, Reissue of 1939 edition to the kindergarten class (I'm librarian and Carolina was in the class), the Eiffel Tower is identified in the story. That was it--that was the only time Carolina heard the term or saw the picture. On the way to school the next day, Carolina pointed to a tall, grilled structure and excitedly exclaimed, "There's the Eiffel Tower!" She made the connection. Several of the Littlest Pets go on a tour of major cities of the world, visit landmarks, eat ethnic foods, and learn the meanings of "foreign" words. It's an introduction to a major life lesson--that other countries and cultures exist. These are the types of information sprinkled throughout the "tour." In London they learn about the Changing of the Guard and the seriousness of the guards. The flag is displayed and a sidebar explains that Big Ben is the bell inside the tower. They tour the city on a double-decker bus and enjoy scones, crumpets, and "chips." In Italy they visit the Leaning Tower of Pisa; in fact, one of the pets poses on the leaning side as if he is holding up the tower. In Venice they ride the gondolas and learn that the roads are canals and transportation is via water. In China they make friends and share bamboo shoots with a panda bear. They take in the view from the top of the Great Wall and visit the life-sized statues of the terra cotta army at Xi'an. Skunk uses his chopsticks to eat rice, crispy noodles, and spicy vegetables, while Persian Cat arranges hers in her hair. They also learn a few Chinese words like "shou huan ying (welcome), gan xie (thanks), and zai hui (good-bye). And so on. Other places they visit are Australia, France, Kenya, California, and back to New York, where they take in the play, South Pet-Cific. Although mass-produced like some of the Disney books, the art is still nice and the pets adorable. Because of the combination of favorite toys and education, this book meets the standards for Must-Have books. For my nieces at any rate. A fun addition are the three tags--a dog, panda bear, and cat--that can be attached to belt loops, backpacks, notebooks, or any other desired place. You can see these outlined in pink on the cover. The shape of the book is a suitcase, another reminder of travel, one of the best learning experiences of all! A wonderful little book filled with adventure and seeds of potential knowledge.
