weird book

I just picked this book up at a used book sale thinking it would be a quaint, gentle little story. Wow! I don't know exactly where the author was coming from or what he was trying to say but I haven't laughed so much from a book in a long time. So what was it - was he beaten by a nun as a child? Strict catholic parents? Athiest parents? Whatever it was it produced a very strange crazy book. It was genious to have that wonderfully deceptive decription on the back cover - what makes it so shockingly funny is the whole suprise of what really happens to this poor stupid nun. Bravo Reginald!

A minor cult classic

I disagree with the above reviewer. This is not ONE of the silliest books I’ve ever read, it’s THE silliest book I’ve ever read. But it’s also one of the funniest! The blurb on the back says it’s about "the difference that one person can make." That’s obviously meant sarcastically! Not only does the protagonist make no difference, but every time she tries to do so she is either beaten up or shot. She must be shot about twney times throughout the whole book. Also, I didn’t find it to be anti-Catholic or anything like that because the characters are so absurd that one can’t take any of them seriously. Some of the situations are genuinely hysterical. For instance, when the nun gets stung with all those bees and when she’s in the jungle and the natives throw spears at her. It’s just so ridiculous you have to laugh. But the important thing is the quality of the writing. It’s really good and important moral issues are raised along the way. Also, it’s very inventive. That’s why it’s gets a high rating from me: when you’ve read enough, you begin to appreciate style and novelty are their own sakes. It ranks as a cult classic!
