Every patient is an individual, of course, but most individuals are heavily affected by their own cultural beliefs, biases, and teachings. What is considered normative may be arbitrary, or possibly even factually incorrect, for different cultures, yet the psychiatrist needs to be aware of these norms in order to better be able to understand and help the patient.
