the rights of man

From the late Middle Ages to the start of the Industrial Revolution, Shennan traces the ideas of human rights as these slowly emerged in several European countries. The analysis seems best when it compares across countries. The reader is continually reminded that back then, kings yielded real power, and were very reluctant to relinquish it to commoners. The progress was greatest in Britain and France.
