LETTERS - The Voices of Australia
Book One: 1850-1989
History tells us what happened. Letters let us imagine how it felt.
What was it really like to live through the events that shaped Australia? What did ordinary people think, fear, hope for and dream about as the nation changed around them?
LETTERS - The Voices of Australia invites readers to experience Australian history through the intimate and deeply personal voices of those who might have lived it.
From the excitement and hardship of the nineteenth-century goldfields to the challenges, triumphs and transformations of the twentieth century, these fictional letters bring Australia's past vividly to life.
Within these pages are the imagined voices of miners, settlers, families, workers and everyday Australians confronting extraordinary circumstances. Some write of love and separation, others of injustice, courage, hardship, humour and the determination to build a better future.
These are not the grand speeches of politicians or the official accounts found in history books. They are personal reflections, written as though by people who witnessed history unfolding around them.
Each letter is an original work of historical fiction, inspired by Australia's history and the real events that helped shape the nation. Together, they offer a different way of experiencing the past - not simply learning what happened, but imagining what it might have felt like to be there.
The letters may be imagined. The history behind them is based on true events. The feelings are timeless.
Book One covers 1850-1989 and begins an ongoing series exploring Australia's history through the voices of its people.
