Around the world both children and adults alike have composed their own prayers of hope and peace both in wartime and times of calm. People in Northern Ireland, Bosnia and in the Middle East people of many religions have fought one another, but also have prayed. There are African, Shinto, Native American and Hindu prayers. One of the most famous of all prayers was penned by Saint Francis of Assisi, who loved all creatures large and small. Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Satish Kumar had their own brand of peace prayer. What kind of prayers do you like? "If there is to be peace in the world, There must be peace in the nations. If there is to be peace in the nations, There must be peace in the cities. If there is to be peace in the cities, There must be peace between neighbours. If there is to be peace between neighbours, There must be peace in the home. If there is to be peace in the home, There must be peace in the heart." --Lao-Tzu This is a lovely, representative book of prayers from young and old around the world. Each prayer sends its own particular message from forgiveness, to unity, to protection and beyond. This book is beautifully illustrated and seems to capture the essence of both the good and bad of humankind. There are scenes of war and one of a concentration camp that some parents may feel a bit strongly about presenting to a younger child. One prayer states it was "Found beside the body of a Jewish child in a German concentration camp, 1945." Sy Miller and Jill Jackson's famous poem, "Let There Be Peace on Earth" is included. This is a beautiful compilation of prayers that many will enjoy discussing and sharing with their children! Shanti.
