Lena O. Smith: The People's Lawyer

Lena O. Smith was an extraordinary woman. As Minnesota's first Black woman realtor in 1915, she experienced firsthand the unfair housing practices used against Black people. Not being able to do anything about it, she was inspired to become a lawyer. In 1921, at just thirty-five years old, she transformed her real estate office into a law office. She won her very first case, helping a Black family earn the rightful deed to their home. Lena worked as a civil rights lawyer until her death in 1966. She was a difference maker who had a tremendous impact on her community and the lives of Black people everywhere by helping to transform unfair legal practices.
