Legends of Shadow

Other than the PCs, there are five other very important "individuals" in the Midnight Campaign Setting. These five are so much above any other creature in Eredane (except for the Dark God Izrador, of course), that they are usually used more as "plot devices" than anything else. The "five Avatars of Eredane" were introduced in the main setting book, and hints of their plans and doings might be found throughout the entire Midnight line of books. "Legends of Shadow" takes each of the Avatars and places it under the spotlight. Legends of Shadow is the 15th supplement in the excellent Midnight line detailing the land of Eredane after the conquest of the Izrador and his minions. Following the same pattern as other Midnight supplements, Legends is a 64-page, black and white soft-cover. The cover art (in full color) depicts an improbable situation in which we see the Witch-Queen scrying on the four Night Kings. I say improbably not because most probably the Night Kings have anti-scrying spells going on, but because the night Kings would most probably not stand so close together... unless they were directed too. I'm not sure I really like this cover, but it depicts the subjects of the book well enough. The interior art is mostly good, dark and gritty as is usual for Midnight products. As expected, the book is divided into 5 chapters and an Introduction which provides bare bones description of Epic Play in Midnight, and general steps on creating new Night Kings. I really don't know enough about epic play of mechanics to talk about this part. Every chapter in the book begins with a detail of the tragic circumstances that brought about the creation/birth of the Night Kings and Aradil. The stories are indeed tragic, and at times I found myself liking one of the Night Kings more, even though he is totally corrupted and evil. After the short history lesson we learn much more of each of the Avatars: 1. The Activities & Goals of each one, both personal and those they perform of their Dark God. 2. Resources. This includes strongholds, minions, personal knowledge and contacts. 3. Allies & Enemies describes the noteworthy "relations" between the various Avatars, as well as other relevant organization or individuals. 4. The Weakness section describing just that. Each one of these Avatars, while incredibly strong, still has weakness that might be exploited. 5. Last are the stats of the particular Avatar, including any magical item of import, powers, etc. All these different sections bring us a real in-depth and vivid picture of the Avatars. And while I do not particularly care for all the stats, I confess that it was interesting to read about the special powers and abilities of the Avatars... even though I will most probably not use it in game. But the rest of the information in this supplement can spark many adventure and campaign ideas, even if the players will not know who is pulling the strings until they reach really (and I do mean real
