From the Germany of Weimar up to the 2000s, evil has been a recurrent theme in German cinema. The expressionism of the 1920s establishes the figure of metaphysical evil (Nosferatu, Doctor Mabuse). At the same time activist cinema depicts the fatality of social determinism (Loulou, "M"). The Nazis then turned it into a total propaganda medium. For today's German and Austrian filmmakers, the question is no longer to know if evil exists but in what form good and morality are possible.
