Now you can have normal vision all the time, thanks to excimer laser treatment-commonly known as PRK and LASIK-a painless procedure that takes less than five minutes. Dr. Andrew I. Caster, one of the leading physicians in the permanent correction of nearsightedness, astigmatism, and farsightedness, takes you through the entire process-including the experiences of patients who have undergone the procedure and their incredible joy at suddenly being able to see again. * What are the differences between the PRK, LASIK, and RK procedures, and which is right for me? * What are the most common side effects of excimer laser treatment? * How do I judge whether a doctor is sufficiently qualified to perform excimer laser treatment? * Will the procedure be painful? * When can I fully resume normal daily activities such as driving and reading? * Will eye laser treatment stop my eyes from getting worse? * How well has the FDA monitored this technique? * How many people have successfully undergone the procedure? The Eye Laser Miracle is the guide for anyone who wants better vision.
Although copyright on this book is 2008, the majority of the information has not been updated since 2001 publication. However, the content is still extremely throrough, well written, and easy to read. Author does not discuss Lasik flap creation by microkeratome vs laser, nor that advances in laser flap creation are resulting in more patients being eligible for Lasik (because laser flaps are thinner & more accurate). Pain after PRK treatment is glossed over, detailing best case scenarios and implying it is easily handled with pain meds. In reality, many patients have substantial pain after PRK treatment - sometimes to the point of refusing treatment on 2nd eye. The author indicates such reactions occur roughly 2 out of 10 times. I'd say he has a unusually high number of high-pain tolerant patients. A large amount of patient experiences are provided. The process is explained well and in layman's terms. There is guidance on how to select a doctor, expectations, and complications. Part 2 of the book includes "Additional Information for those who want to know more": Who monitors the technique, its history, and alternate treatment options. Overall, this is an excellent resource for anyone who is considering laser vision correction and desires a quick, but thorough, understanding of the process.

The Eye Laser Miracle : The Complete Guide to Better
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 25 years ago
This book is extremely informative! It pretty much answered every question I had regarding LASIK, in a very objective and easy-to-understand manner. In fact, I was so impressed by Dr. Caster that I scheduled an initial (and free) consultation, to see if I was a candidate. Turns out I was, and after a more thorough pre-op exam, including an unanticipated trip to a retinal specialist (they saw something they wanted checked out and preferred a specialist's seal of approval), I went through with the LASIK procedure. I can't praise this book enough, for giving me helpful information that made me a better, more informed patient. I felt very much in control -- well, as much as I could be, under the circumstances; and that, I think, should be any patient's ultimate objective, regardless of the medical procedure.

I was very hesitant to have lasik done and after reading Dr. Caster's book, I felt much more sure of the procedure. This was like a bible to me before and after the procedure. It was not too wordy,in fact it was straight and to the point, unlike other books about medical procedures. Anyone who is considering lasik should buy this book. It is also very reasonably priced and not as wordy as some of the other books I saw.You don't need a long, expensive book....you simply need what Dr. Caster has done, a very informative book that answers all your questions and gives you very honestly, the pros and cons of the procedure.I have given this book to many friends who were so grateful to have this information right at their fingertips.Glasses off to Dr. Caster!!!
