A biography of Helen Scott, the American go-between of the French New Wave
Helen Scott's life was colourful but she was long overshadowed. Her youth was spent between the United States and France where she helped the French Resistance. Then, while working at the French Film Office in New York, she met Fran ois Truffaut. He had come to champion his masterpiece Les Quatre Cents Coups in the United States after its triumph at the Cannes Film Festival. A fascinating, tender but tortured friendship began; it would last 25 years and Helen Scott became indispensable (he was her "Truffe" and she his dear "Scottie"). Thanks to her intuition, sensitivity and extraordinary good humour she helped the whole generation of New Wave directors - Godard, Resnais and more - to dazzle on American screens. She attended the famous meeting between Truffaut and Hitchcock in Hollywood, juggling between French and English, laughing at their jokes as she translated them and instilling a happy rapport between these two giants.
Serge Toubiana was director of Les Cahiers du cin ma and the French Cin math que for many years. He runs UniFrance (which promotes French film abroad). He has written several books about film, including co-writing a biography of Fran ois Truffaut, translated in the US (University of California Press). His last book, Les bou es jaunes, was published by Stock.
