This novel describes the difficult love story between Laia and Robert. Laia is the only daughter of an immensely wealthy and famous man who is too concerned about the danger of fortune seekers and has become overprotective. Laia leaves home and becomes a school teacher in Philadelphia under an assumed name. She falls in love with Robert. Bt the young man is severely traumatized by a horrible tragedy in his childhood. He lives in pain because he has never been able to forgive himself. His relations with women are clumsy and difficult, he refuses to explain what happened and Laia has a difficult task ahead of her. She will not give up.
