The earth has been invaded by aliens, and the Martians, with their superior technology, devastate London and its surroundings, sowing death and destruction wherever they go. The radio adaptation that Orson Welles made of this novel in 1938 caused the public, still unaware of television fiction, to believe that an extraterrestrial invasion was really taking place and unleashed great social alarm. This early example of the power of mass media was the first of countless adaptations and reinterpretations that have fed the imagination of what we understand today as science fiction and have elevated H. G. Wells as one of the most well-known names of the genre.
