Kullan voima: Kertomus [Finnish]

By Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Can limitless wealth relieve poverty without quietly destroying independence? Raffles Haw, a scientifically trained inventor of immense means, establishes an extraordinary estate near Tamfield, where advanced machinery, chemistry and electricity become instruments in an ambitious social experiment. Yet every act of generosity raises a sharper question: when one man possesses the power to transform other lives, can charity remain free of dependence? Beyond the guarded laboratory, museum and greenhouses, Haw's influence reaches a family already strained by financial hardship and competing ambitions. Robert Mc Intyre, a young artist, finds his attention shifting from painting towards the inventor's technological power and social influence, while luxury and security exert their own attraction elsewhere. Wealth does not merely promise relief; it alters expectations, relationships and the balance between gratitude and resentment. This speculative novel brings scientific responsibility into direct contact with social inequality, examining philanthropy through its effects on pride, class and personal freedom. Its estate-based experiment turns invention into a moral problem: machinery may expand what is possible, but it cannot determine how people will respond to opportunity, obligation or envy. As generosity and self-interest become increasingly difficult to separate, the story probes the unintended consequences of trying to reform society through private power.
