kishi and Ryū: An atypical fairy tale

In many fairy tales, we find antiquated stereotypes being reinforced. Women are typically valued by their physical beauty. Men, especially dashing knights, are often seen as brave heroes who rescue a princess in peril. It is a presumption of this genre that any young maiden would love to become a princess, and therefore seldom is a woman's consent to marry into royalty ever questioned. Dragons, stepmothers, and old women, presumed to be villains and witches, suffer the worst fate. Kishi and Ryū's heroic effort in challenging some of these stereotypes hopefully will not go unnoticed.
