Absolutely amazing book

This book is amazing on so many different levels. The book features three Princesses (college students who dress like princesses) who are hit-women. They're kind of ditzy even though they're amazing killers, and the first chapter of the book finished by a Princess posing the question to her sorority mother, "We are killing the bad guys, aren't we?" It's black and white, it contains curse words, and the writing is amazing. Because of this book, I'm probably going to read all of Gail Simone's other works. This book inspired me to buy and read Gimpel the Fool: And Other Stories, because while the princesses are in college class, the professor drones on and on in the background about Gimpel the Fool. There are so many different layers to the book, the layer of the ditzy princesses, the layer of the sorority mother, the layer of the organization that the sorority mother is part of, the layer of the people on the outside fascinated by that organization, the college professor, and the college professor's lecture. And, it's a relatively short graphic novel. This will be one of my favorites for years.

Okay, with this twisted little work of saccharine genius, ex-Birds of Prey/Deadpool scribe Gail Simone has officially attained the status of geek goddess in my eyes. I honestly don't believe that there is another writer out there that can make me laugh as hard or often. I think the foreword to this book says it best when it describes her as "eager to write for an audience whose souls were blacker than soot coating the abbatoirs of Hell." All praises be. "Killer Princesses" is NOT for children. Ignore the Disney-esque cover for within lies so much foul language and vile humor that I wouldn't even subject most adults to it. Hope, Charity, and Faith are the three ironically-named (and supercute) "heroines" of this work. They are the top assassins for an organization whose purpose I've already spoiled and is supercool if controversial. You know the archetypes: the firecracker, the brains of the operation, and the perpetually-happy loveable moron. But in this story, the firecracker (Faith) can speak entire sentences using only the F-word, the brains (Hope) would gladly spend her final breath calling her best friend a "doghumper", and the moron (Charity) is prone to bursting into a celebratory Riverdance before strangling her injured victim to death. Now, tell me you've seen THAT. These girls make The Dirty Pair look like rank amateurs, both in trash-talking and death-dealing. 10 Things I love about "Killer Princesses": - The phrase "love sausage" - An unflattering Star Wars reference used to describe woman's nether region. - Hope's Scooby Doo impression. "Rive Re a Row-Rob!" - 3 words: Tiki Mask Assassin! - A barometer pointing to Charity's crotch used to indicate her attraction to a guy (it's between "Rain Forest" and "Ocean") - The Gravy Boat of Death. - Charity's history speech (she declares among other things that Japan bombed Pearl harbor because they were upset about not having Christmas) -A page of X-Rays of broken bones inflicted by Faith with her standing blissfully in the foreground declaring "I love my job!" - Charity's adorable illustrated diary entries - EVERYTHING ELSE! Co-creator Lea Hernandez' manga-inspired artwork fits the light-hearted but nihilistic tone of "Killer Princesses" perfectly. Her facial expressions really bring the dialogue to life and make every character shine. In spite of all the gross-out humor, whimsical violence, and general vileness of the story, there is a surprisingly insightful political debate to be had within these pages. Once you wipe the tears of laughter away after a barrage of Kegel humor, there is a slight intellectual aspect to enjoy as well. It's peculiar that the "from the Publisher" section mentions only Gail Simone and appears to be from 2002. Likewise, the byline I see right at this moment at the top of the page I am typing text into says, "Gail Simone". Why should I care? I am Lea Hernandez, the co-creator of this book, and also the artist. I am currently the artist for the Hardy Boys comic/graphic novel series for Papercutz. My previous work include Marvel Mangaverse Punisher, Rumble Girls (NBM 2004), Cathedral Child and Clockwork Angels (Cyberosia), and the forthcoming instructional book, Manga Secrets (North Light, Feb. 2005). Gail is currently the writer of DC Comics' Birds of Prey, has written an episode of the animated Justice League TV series, and about a million other things. Don't let the half-accuracy of the information provided deter you: Gail and I poured a lot of love and time into Killer Princesses, and I sincerely hope you will buy and enjoy it.
