From the very first page of Killer Mountain the careful reader observes Pinkam's mastery of the elements of craft. His first paragraph is loaded with date, climate, action, description, place, time, hook, clue, concrete image, and conflict--all in only seven lines. A change in chapter indicates a change in point of view. Each preceding chapter mentions the name of the following POV character. Pinkham's similes maintain a continuity of thought: "tapping...as though a chickadee on the roof; "whittled...like gnarled sailboat masts" (3)--both carry the theme of living out of doors. His choice of verbs inspires emulation, "He was almost finished ribboning White Snake" and "snaking through the powder at trail's edge" (23). Killer Mountain is a fast-paced piece of literature that had me crying one moment and laughing the next. It was a joy to read.

Although billed as a sequel to "Hidden Mountain," it definitely is a stand-alone mystery which has the beautiful White Mountains of New Hampshire as its backdrop.
