Yet Another Success from the Office of Todd Strasser
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 26 years ago
Todd Strasser's talent shone through in this book, Kidnap Kids. I was amazed at the way it was written; it is difficult to tell whether the author was an adult or a kid. Not only does the narrator's arrangement of words matches that of an ordinary twelve or thirteen year old, but the problems at the beginning of the book mirror the problems a teenager faces as well. In addition to that, the middle school aged narrator's logic was not well trained, as his plans were not completely thought out, like when he locked all the keys in the trunk of the family's car except for the one that belonged to his father's rental. The suspense element was seamlessly worked in story with a cliffhanger at the end of each chapter. This became exciting toward the end when the family was trying to think up ways to elude the Nut Bombers, and how they could get to the phone located on the grounds of a small store on the other side of a river with raging rapids. This suspense also led to surprise incorporated at the end, with the mother driving a truck trying to escape the Nut Bombers and a member of the militia clinging to the side.Humor was used thoroughly throughout the story, mostly stemming from an adolescent's limited problem solving abilities, as in the case of keys mentioned earlier in this essay. Another example of well-planned humor was at the end of the book when the narrator's mother, who was driving the truck, took off one of her uncomfortable shoes and hit the Nut Bomber that was clinging onto the side.Overall, I enjoyed the novel very much. Other than a few points where Strasser could have gone into deeper clarification, I believe it deserves, in every respect, the perfect rating which I gave it. This book took three different concepts, problems in life, humor, and action, all of which could clearly be identified, and blended them together flawlessly without resorting to pretentious measures. Almost all of Todd Strasser's books are award-winning masterpieces, and Kidnap Kids is no exception.
