Khel Khatam: {Short stories} [Urdu]

By Ashar Najmi

This collection of short stories is the result of an effort to see war not through the eyes of the victors or the victims, but through the innocent eyes that haven't even begun to understand the lines on maps. The age between three and twelve is that delicate threshold where logic still cuddles up to absurdity. A child doesn't understand martyrdom; they see a "silent bed"; they don't grasp the devastation of an atomic bomb, but rather its "shine"; and they don't view hunger as a political crisis, but call it a "stomach earthquake."

Each story in this collection has a unique geographical and cultural locale, but they all share the same essence: the struggle for human survival that quietly breathes in the graveyard of words.
