Oranges Are Not The Only Book On This Subject

'Keeping The Faith' is a fantastic book. Like the only other reviewer of it here, I cannot understand why it is out of print. I can only assume that it has been overshadowed by Jeannette Winterson's technically more sophisticated version of a similarly odd religious upbringing, 'Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit'.I liked 'Oranges' but for me the book that comes closest to recording my own experience of that teenage emotional blight known as Christian fundamentalism is 'Keeping The Faith'. The closing section where she writes 'Show me a cross and I'll show you a....etc.' is superb. Amen, sister!! True, 'Keeping'lacks the technical virtuosity of 'Oranges' but I wonder how many 'Oranges' fans REALLY understand the fairy tale chapters and how many like me relished in fact only those chapters of realistic narrative such as you find in 'Keeping'.Anyway, I did not write this recommendation for 'Keeping' because I wanted to question/undermine 'Oranges' reputation. Far from it. I only feel the Clewlow book's disappearance without trace is a travesty of poetic justice.Come on, all you fellow sufferers under the scourge of evangelicalism, let's get 'Keeping The Faith' back in the shops where it can help save a few more of us!!

Keeping the Faith

Those of us who grew up in fundamentalist homes and made the painful, guilt-ridden transition into the normal world will be able to relate to every page of this well-written, emotional memoir (the book comes across with such a sense of truthful sincerity that I cannot help thinking of it as a memoir, although it is technically fiction). What's that? You say you grew up in a family that rarely attended church more often than once a week and didn't make a high priority out of worrying about sinful behavior? Hmmm . . . maybe that's why this book never made it into the mainstream. It may be too far from normal experience for very many people to be able to relate to. But as for me, well, I've been wishing for some time that I had stolen the library's copy before they decided to discard it, and I'm delighted to be able to find a used copy here.
