Kalapa

The medium-length documentary Kalapa tells the story of a place in Colombia where the concept of school is reimagined. Viewers are invited to enter the worlds of several adolescents and accompany them in their everyday lives in the Kalapa learning community. Through the voices of the children, the film conveys an honest and constructive critique of global education policy and provides an immediate insight into the development of people who learn out of their own thirst for knowledge. In this written work, I reflect on myself as a learner in the work process from research to editing, and also examine the need for a paradigm shift in education. In doing so, I draw on theories by Sir Ken Robinson, who argues that our school system is based on the values of the industrial age, and contrast this model with findings from educational research.
