A Life Less Ordinary

I have often wondered what the somewhat mythical Jolie Gabor, mother to the stunning Magda, Zsa Zsa and Eva Gabor, could be like. She is mentioned in her daughter's books, and any other publications on the sisters Gabor, as being the driving force behind anything the girls ever did. And this explains it all! Actually reading Jolie's life accounts in her own words is something else; if it's all true, that is. At times she is charming, soft, and loving. Other times it is evident that the seventeen year old who married Vilmos Gabor on a whim never really developed much past being haughty, immature, and self involved. She forgets somewhat major details while zeroing in on the minor ones. She remembers every outfit she ever wore and describes it intricately. The Nazi invasion of Hungary was merely an inconvenience to her. She didn't heed anyone's warnings and seemed to assume it would just float by so she could get on with her fabulous life. She is candid and honest, even when it makes her look like an idiot. But it is evident she did not care what others thought of her or her daughters and that she considered the world a place for her to do what she wanted when she wanted, no questions asked. I suppose her sunny attitude on life could be what allowed her to live all of 98 years. She was a more modern woman than the time she grew up, having a prenuptual agreement several decades before anyone would dare mention the idea. She was a European flapper, bobbing her hair, driving a car, and dreaming of romance. All in all, it makes for an excellent read, never knowing what she will say next. I can see where the girls got their spunk and fire. At times it is jealousy inducing, all the wealth, jewelry, and glamour. Other times it makes me cringe. No wonder the girls couldn't hold a marriage together. Everything revolved around Mama.
