Book Overview

Discover the Enduring Power of Wesleyan Theology John Wesley's Theology Today remains one of the most comprehensive and accessible studies of Wesleyan-Methodist theology ever written. It is an essential resource for seminary students, pastors, lay leaders, and anyone exploring the theological roots of the Methodist tradition. In this landmark work, Colin W. Williams provides a systematic examination of John Wesley's core doctrines in conversation with contemporary theological debate, making Wesley's thought both historically grounded and urgently relevant for today's church. What This Book Covers Drawing directly from Wesley's writings, Williams explores the full scope of Wesleyan theology, including: - Biblical Authority and Christian Experience -- how Wesley balanced Scripture with lived faith - Salvation and Grace -- Wesley's Arminian understanding of prevenient, justifying, and sanctifying grace - Original Sin and Repentance -- the human condition and the call to transformation - Justification and Atonement -- the heart of Wesley's evangelical gospel - The Work of the Holy Spirit -- pneumatology in the Wesleyan tradition - Ecclesiology and the Doctrine of the Church -- what it means to be the people of God - Christian Perfection and Entire Sanctification -- Wesley's most distinctive and debated contribution - Eschatology -- Wesley's vision of the coming Kingdom Wesley in Ecumenical Conversation A defining strength of this study is its ecumenical depth. Williams sets Wesley's theology alongside the thought of Calvin, Luther, and the Roman Catholic tradition -- illuminating both the distinctives of Methodist belief and the surprising common ground Wesley shares with other streams of Christianity. For readers engaged in ecumenical dialogue or comparative theology, this cross-traditional analysis is invaluable. Why This Book Still Matters In an era of renewed interest in spiritual formation, revival, and the ministry of the Holy Spirit, Wesley's vision of a transformed heart and a transformed world speaks with fresh urgency. Whether you are tracing the theological heritage of the United Methodist Church, studying for ordination, leading a small group on Methodist history, or simply seeking a deeper understanding of Christian perfection and sanctifying grace, John Wesley's Theology Today provides the scholarly foundation and pastoral warmth you need. Ideal for: Seminary courses in Methodist theology Pastoral continuing education Wesleyan-Arminian studies Ecumenical theology Church history and doctrine UMC congregational study

And still king

Colin Williams was one of my theology professors at Garrett Evangelical on the campus of Northwestern University. This is an outstanding book on the theology of John Wesley. Williams covers the Order of Salvation which is the key and heart of Wesley's theology. He shows how it all goes together as well as covering the individual parts. It is a masterful job of pulling together Wesley's theology because as we all know Wesley was not a systematic theologian, writing book after book on his theology. Wesley's theology is in sermons, tracts, Notes on the Bible, Journals and Letters and you have to read all of it in order to find out what Wesley is saying. He spent more time and material on those areas in which he had problems or differences of opinion that arose to the point that he felt he had to respond to. Williams is still king in Wesley's theology. He also presents a case for Wesley being reconsidered as a contributor to the council of churches and the Christian Churches getting their theology closer together. A wonderful read for any scholar, minister or layperson. J. Robert Ewbank, author of "John Wesley, Natural Man, and the 'Isms'"
