Most authors who have chronicled the history of PTL and the Bakker "Empire" have been cynical and callous. Mr. Barnhart, however, has presented a thoughtful and very insightful look at the world behind the Heritage USA scandal that rocked American Protestants in 1987. He carefully investigates not only Mr. and Mrs. Bakker and their religious empire, but also other key players in the world of Mega-church televangelism, including Jimmy Swaggart, Oral Roberts, and Jerry Falwell. This book makes an attempt at explaining, though not excusing, the mindset of the Pentecostal/Charismatic worldview. As a former Pentecostal turned Roman Catholic, I found Mr. Barnhart's commentaries to be quite sympathetic toward the sometimes bizarre worldview of the Pentecostal/Charismatic churches and their followers. This book presents the facts and refrains from personal judgements or cynicisms. Barnhart also shows how others besides the Bakkers were somewhat largely responsible for the antics of PTL and Heritage USA. This is a great book!
