Fabulous writing and dePaola's signature characters . . .

I discovered this book by accident. The cover didn't look like much but I read it anyway, and I am so glad that I did. I found, inside the un-impressive cover, a beautiful story about a little boy who lost his hearing to the German measles. At his birthday party Jamie is given a stuffed tiger and, after some balloons pop near his ears, Jamie says that all he can hear is the tiger roaring. This is a great literary device and Jan Wahl explores its possibilities fully. Being a great fan of Tomie dePaola, I found the artwork equally stunning and recognized a few of his frequent characters. It is a shame that this book is out of print. Anyone interested in deaf culture, or who teaches deaf children, or those who are just looking for diversity books that come from a child's perspective should snatch up any copy of this book that htey find. It is a true jem!!
