Invading Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944: A Brief History

On an early June morning in 1944 the culmination of two years of hard fighting paid off for the Allied forces. A force unlike any other the Germans had yet seen had gathered in the English Channel and they were ready to attack across the beaches of Normandy. The Germans, though aware the Allies would eventually attack France at some point in the war, were totally surprised by the view they encountered that morning. An entire Allied force of ships of all kinds was bearing down on them and ready to make their presence known that morning.

For the Americans in this contingent of troops, they made ready land to across a couple beaches known as Utah and Omaha. The vastness of Omaha Beach with obstacles on one side and the German defenses along the high ground each dominated how the landings were to play out. And as the morning of June 6, 1944, began American troops from the 1st and 29th Infantry Divisions were in landing craft off the beach and on their way to shore with the intent to fight and destroy the German defenses.
