For years, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of international students at German universities. Institutions are promoting themselves through internationalisation and the formation of international networks. This book examines the living and studying conditions of foreign-language students who come to universities in Germany as part of mobility or exchange programmes. It focuses primarily on the factors that motivate students to study abroad and those that become barriers to a successful study period. Examples from an ethnographic study at the Free University of Berlin illustrate the causes of orientation and language problems and their influence on the social and emotional behaviour of students. Recommendations for improving institutional services for foreign-language students are intended to eliminate the remaining deficits in intercultural training and programmes.
