Before you buy another bottle of water...

While the world is deeply concerned with wars, avian flu, weather catastrophes and other immediate problems, the "big boys" of the water bottling industry are busy staking out water claims just about everywhere. They obtain this precious commodity virtually for free, place it in plastic bottles and sell it back to us at enormous profits. There is a shortage of water now; wait until a few more years as population grows and grows and as more water sources dry up or are too polluted to drink. These water bottling giants will have an unrelenting strangle hold on the world. You can live without oil, but you can't live without water! Tony Clarke's gutsy INSIDE THE BOTTLE is a "must read" for everyone. The public. The leaders. The politicians. Just about everyone who cares about the future. So far, the mass media has virtually ignored this very important topic, because it is involved with immediate problems. But the "water problems" aren't going to dissolve. Clarke points out various ploys that the bottled water industry uses to sell packaged water. He tells us that tests indicate that bottled waters aren't necessarily safer than tap water (two of the giant companies process tap water, package it and sell it to us a huge profits). In fact, some tests of bottled waters proved the opposite: Not as safe as tap water, which is more thoroughly tested. And then what happens to the disposable plastic bottles? If we think they are recycled into other bottles, as most of us do, we're wrong. Most bottles end up in landfills, or are burned ( a process that not only requires energy to complete but also emits toxic fumes). Many plastic bottles are simply discarded anywhere...lawns, forests, riverbanks. Clarke provides charts, figures and lots of important data, as well as a special feature ("Community Probes"), which is designed, for readers to explore their areas. He doesn't say ban bottled water-it is certainly necessary at times and in many parts of the world. Clarke's presentation is very easy to follow; his logic is almost Socratic. Obtain it. Read it. And think about what he and others have to say on water. Before it is too late!
