De Angeles rewilds her own story and transforms cultural stereotypes into a language of honestty and unapologetic witchcraft. INITIATION recalls an age, seemingly forgotten in an era of sexual and gender acceptance, of lies and christian fists. Fogetting is the sleep of freedom, she says, of the baby-scoop era, when girls as young as her own mother were forced, by shame and threat, to vanish their newborn children, supposedly in-perpetuity. She knows it is still happening. Children remain a form of currency to those who have the money to acquire one. This is not over and slavery is a hall of many mirrors.
