During a house party at the home of the wealthy but enigmatic Edmund Llewelyn, Edmund and Hilary Carewe uncover a decade-old murder mystery and slowly develop a romantic interest in each other.... This description may be from another edition of this product.
This was a lucky find at a 2nd hand bookstore. It's old and out of print, but worth reading if you can find it. Hilary Carewe is recently orphaned and offered companionship by an old friend of her mother in London. Mrs. Medcroft is a wacky psychic who talks to ghosts for money. A disgruntled client calls the cops, and they need to leave town quickly. They decide to attend a house party in the country. Hilary, being young and somewhat naive, believes her companion to be good-hearted even if her seances are a bit silly. But then strange things start happening. A ghost makes an appearance, and accuses virtually every member of the family and all the house guests of murdering her. Then there are lots of delightful twists and turns, and the story meanders for a while and then reaches a most satisfying conclusion. Oh, and Hilary falls in love too. So what did I like about this story? The characters of course. They were great! I liked the way they got into arguments during every seance. Like a real family with real history. And the portrayal of amorality and narsicism masquerading as sweetness was spot on. I like a good villain with some depth. A very satisfying book. Too bad nobody but me knows about it. Oh well, read it if you get a chance.
