This analysis defines Indias foreign policy as being based on four broad goals: national security, modernization, regional primacy and a role in the international order. It then analyzes foreign policy in terms of the evolution of these goals since 1947. The main thrust of the study is to: define these goals as originally conceived; highlight all the changes that have since been introduced into the original conceptualization; and investigate all the domestic and international factors that have contributed to this adaptive process.
