"In the Thirtieth Year," poetry

Revised Edition: LukivPress (Victoria, BC), 2022.

Introduction

613 BCE: Jeremiah, in Judah, prophecies the fall of Jerusalem. Already Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, has taken many Jews captive, including Daniel, and his three Judean companions, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah, who serve this mighty Chaldean king. Where do most expatriated Jews live? By the river Chebar. Does Jehovah leave those dispossessed Jews without spiritual help? No! Ezekiel, Jehovah's 30-year-old prophet, provides fearless direction. He records fascinating events (613 to 591 BCE) that describe names, dates, and places. Yes, we read of 22 years filled with prophetic statements about 1) the dramatic fall of Jerusalem; 2) the demise of surrounding nations; and 3) the revival/restoring of Jewish worship of Jehovah.

An excerpt

Chapter 48

Jehovah-Shammah,
Yes, God is there-

In the fire?8
O no! Not in the fire.
In the wind?
O no! Not in the wind.
In the quaking earth?
O no! Not
In the quaking earth.
But you are there,
Certainly, on profane
Dust,

Jehovah-Shammah,
A city of many gates,
Like open arms,
Like a mother's
Arms, welcoming her
Children,
And the overseers,
See, approachable,
Refreshing like cool
Water,

See, the profane land,
A new earth,
Yet billions of years
Young,

Yes, joy and peace-
These fountains
Overflow,
And the streets sing
Like the seas that
Overflow with the
Knowledge of God.
