First published in Britain in 1985, In the Ruins of the Reich is a classic account of Nazi Germany after her fall to the Allies in May 1945. Botting concentrates on the defining events that took place... This description may be from another edition of this product.
Many history books discuss the war against Nazi Germany, but most stop with the surrender of Germany, and pick up again at the Berlin Blockade. This fascinatingly different book looks at Germany in defeat. The story begins with the first German territory occupied by Allied armies, and then unfolds what just what happened. This is the story of rape and pillage, of Displaced Persons from throughout Europe, of concentration camps opened and concentration camps rebuilt. This is not a happy book. When Nazi Germany was laid waste, her many crimes were exposed, and the German people paid a terrible price. But, don't get the idea that this is a book that attempts to paint the Germans as victims. This book accurately chronicles what happened at the end of the war, including what happened to the Jews and how Nazi crimes bore a bitter fruit. Overall, I found this to be a fascinating, if somewhat depressing book. The writer's use of copious quotes from primary sources adds real poignancy to the narrative. It is amazing the crimes that people can commit against their fellow human beings. If you want to read about a nearly forgotten chapter in modern Western history, then this is the book for you. I highly recommend this book.
Phenomenal book

Probably one of the best books on post-war Germany - basically this is about the US Occupation of Nazi Germany. Botting tells tales from the smallest of people to the generals, both American and German. Also interlaced are hardships having to do with coal shortages, food and DPs (Displaced Persons). A fascinating read for anyone who enjoys reading about occupied Germany.
