Reid Breton, a 12-year-old child who was abandoned as a newborn, only wants to blend in at the posh boys' school where he now attends. When you're a destitute orphan surrounded by wealthy children and a headmistress with a grudge, it's easier said than done. Reid seizes the opportunity to flee when Oliver, the twin he was unaware he possessed, bursts out of a tunnel in the basement wall of the dormitory.

Reid discovers that he wasn't abandoned as a newborn as he travels with Oliver down the tunnel to Hollenmere, the secret location of their birth. Darthags, faun-like creatures that steal infants from Hollenmere and abandon them on Earth at their queen's command, abducted him. Reid thinks that he will finally find his place in the woodlands of Hollenmere, even though the idea of monsters kidnapping babies is more than a bit unsettling.

As soon as he arrives and starts through training to become a soldier to battle darthags, that hope starts to disintegrate. Even while Reid is eager to train with Oliver in swordsmanship and archery, the idea of really facing the darthags paralyses him-not the least of which is the fact that he isn't very skilled in soldiery. He becomes ill in the practise area, and his teammates treat him differently out of concern for any extraterrestrial diseases he might be harbouring. The only person who has faith in Reid's talents is Oliver.

However, when Oliver is taken prisoner by the darthags, Reid must muster the courage to fight or risk losing his only brother and only friend for all time.
