Runkle provides a skilful interweaving of women's personal narratives about abortion and pregnancy continuation along with useful American information about abortion procedures, abortion law in her country, and religious organisations that support reproductive choice. However, I can't give it my full blessing, despite her detail on abortion as a reproductive choice. What about women that were coerced into enforced adoptions, rather than open adoptions? I have a dear friend who has suffered terrible grief, bereavement and broken relationships because she was forced into an inappropriate reproductive decision for her own life when she was a teenager. Secondly, what about contraception?? Apart from the discussion of emergency contraception, one would have thought that there needed to be some practical information and discussion about contraceptive techniques and women's responses to them, and how women can negotiate access to safe contraception. While this is an excellent book, it could be even better if it had that additional content. Still,I will be recommending it to NZ abortion providers and family planning [Planned Parenthood] offices.
Answers to the hardest questions about abortion

People can get pretty impassioned in arguing over the merits, ethics, and legality about abortion -- until faced with the decision of whether to have one. Then the abstract arguments fade away, and the concrete reality sets in. A woman asks herself, is this really what I want? A partner wonders, what role can I have in making this decision? In Good Conscience cuts through the policial and religious rhetoric around abortion. In fact, the book seems to focus on the needs of spiritual and religious women who want to be open-minded in making this decision for themselves. Its kind of an "Our bodies, ourselves" for pro-choice religious women. I was struck by its compassionate tone and rigorous adherence to solid information from dependable sources. Here's a book for you, your partner, a friend, or your child or relative to use when faced with one of life's most difficult decisions.
Absolutely essential discussion in today's world!

Anna Runkle has written sensitively about an extremely difficult topic that is of relevance to everyone. She doesn't proscribe. This book gives people a chance to examine their own beliefs about a controversial question, and then if they choose to have an abortion, they will do so with their eyes wide open. I highly recommend this book.
