Kwakutse is a genderqueer African scholar who does not know which of the sexes he belongs to. He is a man believed to be trapped in a woman's body. He has to conform to the gender role his society has constructed for him and bear with his society's name for his kind - man-woman (Kojo Besia). He continues with the pretence until his encounter with Akorfa, a transgender medical doctor who rescues him from despair. To his society, he is a cursed girl who has come into the world from the spirit realm disguised in a boy's body to inflict pain on society. His growing years itself is fraught with battling the idea of conforming to the gender role the society expects him to perform. He becomes a defiant gender-nonconforming child who gaily unwinds in the company of the opposite sex. Relentlessly, he engages in doings consistent with the feminine gender and consequently falls out with his society. Is he a man or a woman?
