Imported Plasmodium ovale malaria

Malaria remains the world's leading parasitic endemic, exposing almost half the population. Among the species responsible, Plasmodium ovale is less frequent. This retrospective study describes P. ovale attacks in 65 Tunisian patients returning from missions in the Central African Republic between January 2023 and June 2024. The mean age was 36 years, with a mean stay of 12 months. Adherence to chemoprophylaxis was satisfactory in 31 patients. Symptoms included fever, chills, headache and digestive disorders. Thrombocytopenia, lymphopenia and elevated CRP were frequent laboratory abnormalities. P. ovale was isolated alone in the majority of cases. All patients received artemether-lumefantrine; 45 received primaquine, with fewer relapses in this group. Clinical outcome was favorable in all patients. The increase in the number of cases highlights the importance of early diagnosis, appropriate management and reinforcement of preventive measures.
