International humanitarian law (IHL) is concerned with protecting individuals during armed conflicts and safeguarding their rights from violations that invariably occur during wars. Crimes against humanity and genocide are among the most frequently committed crimes in most wars. Investigations are undertaken to prosecute, hold accountable, and punish those accused or proven to have committed crimes against individuals. However, investigations are often lengthy and complex before a conclusion can be reached. Despite these challenges, IHL continues to provide protection for all groups without discrimination.
