Impact of Nutrition in Head and Neck Cancer

Cancer is a complex disease evolved due to multiple genetic changes leading to uncontrolled proliferation of cells with metastatic ability. The process of cancer development is a multistage event involving inactivation of tumor suppressor genes, activation of oncogenes and altered expression of non-coding ribonucleic acids. Diet and nutrition play a vital role in the etiology, prevention and management of cancer. Since, cancer patients undergo unintentional weight loss and are presented with some degree of malnutrition, dietary management for cancer aims at meeting the increased calorie and protein needs to prevent loss of weight, muscle mass and fat mass; improve the immune system and meet the nutrient requirements. Many studies report that nutritional intervention can improve treatment outcomes and prognosis in cancer.
