California is under quarantine as a result of a virus that is extremely contagious. The dead can enter because the living are imprisoned in high-rise structures; they arrive in all shapes and sizes, from depressing rolling cans to fake human bodies. Rich "companionship" program participants opt to upload their consciousness prior to passing away so they can remain in their families' care. The less fortunate are rented out to strangers after they pass away, but all of their friends become Metis Corporation's property, giving rise to a new class of people-a command-driven product class without real free will or legal protections.
