The pediatrician's waiting room is filled with children waiting to see their doctor. They aren't ill, but rather they are there to have a checkup or physical. There are books and toy to play with, but everyone gets a little nervous waiting because having a checkup isn't something that children do every day. The nurse usually starts out by weighing you on a "beam scale" and slides the "round weights (poises) along the bar (beam)" and then will see how tall you have grown using the "height bar." So far so good. In this book you'll learn about the examination table, how your temperature is taken with a thermometer, you'll learn how an otoscope is used, what a tongue depressor is for, why the doctor uses a stethoscope ("lub-dub!"), you'll learn about why and how your blood pressure is taken, why the doctor needs to know about your reflexes and several other things. "Im at the doctor's office, waiting for a checkup. It's tie to get examined from the neck down to the neck up. I'm feeling pretty brave, though I'm still a little scared. But knowing what each tool is for helps me feel prepared." Most young children are somewhat fearful of going to their pediatrician's when they are ill, but when they go for a physical it can be downright frightening for some because they are very uncertain as to what will happen. The text and pictures make it very clear what will go on with the exception of things like blood work, injections and examination of the genitals (these are discussed in the back). This book can be read to younger children as some of the words such as sphygmomanometer are more difficult to decipher. I liked the fact that the author uses proper medical terminology for medical equipment. This is an excellent book to prepare the young child prior to any physical examination. It would be an excellent book to have in a pediatrician's waiting room!
